A place of life that has become a place of national remembrance, the Maison d'Izieu, a museum and memorial, offers visitors the opportunity to discover history, justice and remembrance today through guided tours of the house and its permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Its history in a few words...
In this house opened by Sabine and Miron Zlatin, more than a hundred Jewish children were taken in from May 1943 to April 1944 in order to escape from anti-Semitic persecution. On the morning of 6 April 1944, the 44 children and the 7 teachers who were there were rounded up and deported on the orders of K. Barbie, one of the heads of the Gestapo in Lyon. Only Léa Feldblum returned from Auschwitz.
Hunted down and brought back to France by Beate and Serge Klarsfeld with the help of Fortunée Benguigui and Ita-Rosa Halaunbrenner, mothers of children rounded up at Izieu, K. Barbie was brought before the French justice system. With the mobilisation of numerous witnesses, he was tried and sentenced in Lyon in 1987 for crimes against humanity.
The "Musée-Mémorial des enfants d'Izieu" was inaugurated on 24 April 1994 by President François Mitterrand. In 2015, the Maison d'Izieu saw the creation of the Sabine and Miron Zlatin building, the redesign of its permanent exhibition and the development of new digital devices. It was inaugurated on 6 April 2015 by President François Hollande.

The Maison d'Izieu today

Today, the Maison d'Izieu is a place of welcome and vigilance which aims to deliver, through the memory of the children and educators of the Colonie d'Izieu, a universal message and act against all forms of intolerance and racism.

The Maison d'Izieu is both a place of national remembrance and a museum where you will find numerous accessible contents on the history, justice and construction of the memory of Izieu. The house, a place of remembrance where the children and their educators lived, collects the children's letters and drawings and their portraits. The museum has a permanent exhibition with a number of interactive exhibits that allow visitors to learn about the families and children of the Colony, the K. Barbie trial, crimes against humanity, and the history of Izieu. Barbie trial and crimes against humanity around the world. The Maison d'Izieu regularly hosts temporary exhibitions.

What to do?
Throughout the year, the Maison d'Izieu offers guided tours of the house by a mediator, workshop-visits for children during school holidays, individual visits to the permanent exhibition enriched with new historical content thanks to the work of its Documentation and Research Centre, as well as a cultural programme that welcomes artists, authors and citizen debates. The Maison d'Izieu invites you to discover its permanent exhibition on the history of the Shoah in France during the Second World War, international justice and the construction of memory. With the help of interactive tables, follow in the footsteps of the families and children of the Izieu colony, crimes against humanity and watch extracts from the K. Barbie trial held in Paris. Barbie trial held in 1987, which definitively anchored the Izieu roundup in the French memory landscape.
